Use AI for one small-business marketing campaign

Facts checked

Use AI for small-business marketing by giving it one campaign task with a clear brief. Name the audience, the action you want them to take and the drafts you need. Choose who will approve the work before you release it.

How do you use AI for small business marketing?

Choose a campaign task, give it approved inputs and name the person who will check the draft. Put those choices in a brief before asking for work.

BreadHead says its agents do marketing research, copy, design, funnels, sites, web apps and repeat admin work. For your campaign, choose the specific piece you want help with, such as a draft announcement for an offer you've already approved.

If you still have a long list of possible tasks, narrow it first. Use the one-page task inventory to choose the work you'll assign.

Build the brief in this order:

  1. Name the audience. Describe who you want to reach without guessing what they think or need.
  2. Write the requested action. Choose what you'll ask the reader to do, such as send a question about a service.
  3. Gather the approved offer details. Leave out any price, deadline or promise you haven't confirmed.
  4. List the draft formats. Say where each piece will go and what it needs to include.
  5. Name the review owner. Ask that person to approve the brief before drafting starts.
  6. Mark what's outside this task. Keep extra offers or new channels out until you've agreed to add them.

Copy this campaign approval brief and fill in the blanks:

DecisionYour brief
Campaign task______
Audience______
Requested action______
Approved inputs______
Draft formats and channels______
Work to leave out______
Review owner______
Questions to settle before drafting______

Example

For a draft about a service, try a request like this:

Prepare a website announcement from the attached service notes. Write for customers who want to ask about furniture repair. Ask them to send a description of the item and the work needed. Leave out discounts and claims about turnaround time. Return the draft to me for review.

Before using the request, check that the details fit your actual offer. Add the notes the drafter should use and remove anything your service doesn't cover.

If email is part of the campaign, assign its duties before planning a send. Use the email work split to decide who drafts, checks and sends.

Choose how you'll review each piece before it reaches the public. Use the content review checklist for the draft checks.

How do you create a marketing plan for a small business?

Start with one campaign. Write down what you want readers to do, what you need to prepare, who checks it and who decides when it goes out. Decide what evidence you'll record afterward, and leave targets and results blank until you've got a basis for them.

Put the brief beside a short work plan. Name who prepares each piece, who approves it and who releases the approved version. If you're doing all of those jobs, still record when you've finished each check.

Set the approval points before work starts. Ask for agreement on the audience and offer first. Then check the drafts against that brief. Before release, confirm the final version and who has cleared it.

Use this check:

  • Has the campaign owner agreed to the audience and offer?
  • Does each requested draft serve the chosen action?
  • Are the materials ready for the person assigned to prepare them?
  • Who can settle an unanswered question about what the campaign promises?
  • Who will record approval of the final version?
  • What will we save after release to judge what to do next?

Leave room in the plan for a hold. If the campaign details change during drafting, ask the owner to update the brief. Check all affected pieces against the new wording before approving them.

Example

Add a hold note when a campaign choice is unresolved:

Release decision: Hold. Confirm whether this announcement covers repairs to upholstered items. Campaign owner to update the service notes before the draft is approved.

Record the release and later evidence separately:

  • Approved version and approver: ______
  • Release date and channel: ______
  • Requested action: ______
  • Target and basis: ______
  • Evidence to save after release: ______
  • Observed result: ______
  • Next decision and person responsible: ______

Use actual records when you fill in the result. Keep any unanswered question beside the entry instead of filling the gap with a guess.

Before trying help with your campaign, decide what a good draft must include. Write those checks on the pilot acceptance sheet.
